Movie Permission Slip / Permiso Para Ver Una Película

(En Español mas abajo)

Dear Parents,

In preparation for the National Spelling Bee, our school will be showing the movie Akeelah and the Bee to all students in grades 1st through 5th this Friday, October 15.  This movie is rated “PG” for some language.

We will edit the movie and remove the very small section where objectionable language is used.  It is our belief that the movie is educational, informative, and age-appropriate for all our students.  It is the story of how a 10-year-old girl from South Los Angeles tries to make it to the National Spelling Bee.

If you have any objections, please let us know so that we can make the necessary arrangements for your child. A permission slip will be sent home on Wednesday. Please return it by Thursday, October 14, 2010. Your child will not be able to see the movie without this permission. You may download the permission slip here.

Free Teacher Professional Development Opportunity! / Oportunidad Para Los Maestros!

Closing the Achievment Gap:
Boys Will Be Boys
The research is clear—boys and girls acquire and process information in different ways and at different ages. Yet the majority of schools today continue to utilize instructional practices geared more towards the cognitive development and learning styles of girls. Consequently, boys continue to remain unplugged, unmotivated, and uninterested—making up a high percentage of reluctant readers, discipline problems, and high school dropouts. In order to truly impact academic achievement for all students, we must embrace and implement effective instructional practices that specifically address the cognitive and emotional needs of both boys and girls.

A big shoutout to all the volunteers who pitched in during our Gardening Day this Saturday! We had a great turnout and the event was a success! The pond was repaired (thank you, Mr. Cairey!), weeds were pulled, new flower pots and flowers were planted, and we had a fantastic time! Ms. Rush and Ms. Ludtke decorated one of the walls on the Science Wing with a "Green Day" Motif.
